Attractions & Activities in Opononi
Opononi Sand Dunes
Across the Hokianga Harbour from Opononi are Giant Sand Dunes. Catch a boat across to explore the dunes at your leisure. Grab a boogie board and you can sand board down the dunes, crossing the narrow beach and splashing into the sea. When you have had enough catch the same boat back to Opononi. There is good safe swimming, take a packed lunch and have a picnic. Explore the sand dunes to discover sand sculptures and rock formations. It really is another world on the sand dunes.
Good Local Fishing
The Hokianga is a great place to come fishing. Omapere hosts the Hokianga Big Game & Fishing Club, catch Marlin, Hapuka or Shark out to sea. There is also good fishing within the harbour, catch Snapper, Kahawai, Mullet or Flounder. Good fishing is also available across the road from our Holiday Park at Opononi Beach, or try your luck off the wharf at Omapere or Opononi.
Waipoua Kauri Forest
Visit Tane Mahuta - the Lord of the Forest. The largest Kauri Tree in the world thought to be at least 2000 years old. The tree is part of the ancient subtropical rainforest that once grew all over Northland. Other giant kauri are found nearby, notably Te Matua Ngahere. Tane Mahuta is a short walk from the main road. Other activities in Waipoua Kauri Forest include a walk by night, giant kauri bush walks and the Waipoua Forest Visitors Centre.
